Evidence from 16th century shipping records
Coal from Newcastle
The demand for coal from Newcastle considerably increased in the 1500s. As well as meeting the requirements of London, the coal ships supplied multiple small ports along the east coast of England. The records for these coal ships are an indication of the number of vessels plying the trade along the coast. The following is extracted from The Merchant Fleet of late Medieval and Tudor England where Cromer is listed as the home port.

Shipping coal off the TyneTransporting coal
In the medieval period coal was brought down the Tyne in keels, and transshipped for the journey down the coast. Later navigation was improved, allowing seagoing vessels to load directly near the coalfields. The trade in coal would continue to Cromer until the 1880s, when the railway arrived; in the later years Cromer's coal was brought from Hartlepool after the East Durham coalfield supply could be brought to that port by railway.
